Twitter folks moving to Mastodon are by definition brand and marketing worshippers and wouldn't be interested in anything I'm doing, so this whole migration thing is kind of a non-event over in this galactic cluster. Maybe a little extra noise around the edges but nothing more.

I stumbled into Hubzilla and then Zap because I'd been moderating a forum for years, and I was looking for anything that would help with the failures of that environment. I remember some sort of manifesto that you had on your website, laying out the social media failures that you were trying to improve with your software. That got my attention. But it has still taken me a few years to (partly) understand the benefits of your design decisions.

I still haven't tried Mastodon. I keep hearing things that make me say "What? Mastodon doesn't have that? We've had that for years!"

As far as I'm concerned, Mastodon is welcome to them. I was never into microblogging; even when I was still using corporate social media, I was on Facebook, not Twitter. And, of course, the whole public-means-public attitude of both Mastodon and diaspora* is a no-go for me. I hardly ever post publicly anymore, but when I do, I still don't need the whole Internet's opinion on it. It's nothing but a vanity thing. Look how popular I am! Nobody over there cares that this is part of what makes those environments so toxic.

Similar here. I understand Twitter implements its own privacy measures but to my way of thinking it's always seemed an essentially public forum, with a primary focus on public affairs. Mastodon looks to be pitched at the same space. Some people like to feel a part of public discourse and for a few it's almost a professional requirement these days, but I'm not not one of them. The world really doesn't need my hot-take on every media issue or celebrity tidbit.

I guess the switch from Twitter to Mastodon is a bit "natural" for most people. The latter is the most similar to TW. For me, there is nothing surprising in that. But I agree with what @Bill Statler said, it's still a good thing for the Fediverse. After that, it's easier to do some "pedagogical work" to try to open people's eyes.

I find it interesting to observe how the way a social network works shapes the behavior of the people who use it. And how these modeled behaviors then prove to be more or less adaptable when one tries to use another social network.

It was the hype about Diaspora* that drew me in at first, and then from there Thomas Willingham was telling people about Friendica that pulled me over to Friendica/Red/Matrix/Hubzilla/Streams

Similar for me. I was too stupid to install a D* pod, ended up with Friendica via StatusNet. Installed my own Friendica server on a shared host and have remained loyal to Mike's software to this day.

I was reading post from a group (i think W3?) talking about standards basically as i recall it was a bunch of "Federation by ACME corp" people who wanted to own the next twitter or whatever, and Mike seemed to be the only legit for-real person in the group. I think that was in Friendica/Friendika days.

I started with Disapora, but realized there was zero support for making a Windows pod. Seth Martin told me about Red Matrix and folks here were willing to help me (in exchange for the entertainment value, probably, LOL) and I got what may have been the only Window hub running (long since abandoned for Linux). My current Hz instance runs on the same hardware I bought back then to support what I thought would eventually be a hub full of my IRL friends. Well, one of them finally joined me years later.
