so you know how you can copy a url to a post to load it to your local view by searching its url inside of mastodon: why is there not a way to go to a profile and click load most recent 100 posts locally?

if I get a new follow on my single user instance from an instance I haven't interacted with it will show none of the posts of the user. I have to load the account in a external web browser to even see who the person is. this is a feature we need to work on making better its so annoying. and I havent seen any #fediverse project implementation of this yet even on zap zot friendica based fedi software

@mu @˗ˏˋ wakest ˎˊ˗ but you’re talking about when the instances aren’t federated and you’re using an app or Brutaldon, right? Not the web app. So “opening their profile in a new tab” is the solution that seems missing from apps and clients themselves.

@Matt Gauger @mu yeah open in the web browser *not* what I want here. If I am browsing the fediverse on my phone I dont want to switch apps on every profile I come across to see if the content is the same as my local view that is just a huge waste of time and there is *no* technical reason why an app cant load those posts locally if I can simply copy and paste the urls one at a time into my client

@˗ˏˋ wakest ˎˊ˗ I know what you mean, and when you try to follow on another instance, it doesn’t know who I am and makes me type out the name + domain correctly. I’m not sure what, but it’d be nice if something could just hook in there and take me to my instance.

@˗ˏˋ wakest ˎˊ˗ im not sure there's an activitypub way of querying messages from a user? messages find their way to u rather than being asked for specifically and the link gives a direct reference to a message

basically i dont think AP provides a way to get posts beyond them being sent to u through follows n boosts or a direct reference.

@˗ˏˋ wakest ˎˊ˗ yeah and the messaging around this flow is also odd and confusing. even on masto web the link for 'go look at their home instance profile' is at the bottom of their feed. so if they have *some* posts loaded on your instance, it shoves the link down and you might assume what you're seeing is everything. really strange middle ground edge case thing that happens because there's no back fill possible

You can put any outbox URL in the search bar on any (streams) site [ also Zap, etc. ] and it actually will load the most recent 100 posts from that collection. We don't do this automatically when looking at contacts because many of our sites are small private sites for friends and family running on raspis or shared hosting. It's easy enough to add.

It doesn't look too hard to add this to the remote profile viewer. I'll work that in when I get some time.

Nope. Anybody [edit: that is logged in] can do it. But you do have to know the url of a message collection of some kind and these are only rarely surfaced in the UI.

@mike I tried searching https://social.wake.st/users/liaizon/outbox from my Streams account I have on https://webs.node9.org/ and get a 504 Gateway Time-out every time. maybe this isn't the url you mean?

That's the correct url. It works for me with some collections but not others and I'm looking now to find out the reason.

Found an issue with collection processing and pushed a fix. I also added the ability to see these conversations locally from the remote profile viewer but had to disable it because it can take a few minutes to load a bunch of remote conversations and all the actors involved. The profile viewer page is just spinning as this happens - which isn't a great usage experience. That needs to be done in the background to be viable. I can do that but not on such a lovely winter day. Have fun at fedicamp.
