I added a Mastodon contact to my Streams account.
I receive posts from that user but I don't see/receive others' replies.

Sometimes there is a delay. I've had cases where it takes a day or two before the comments all come in. And you are more likely to get the comments if you like or comment on the post.

Note: My experience is with following Mastodon contacts on Hubzilla via ActivityPub. I have not tried that in Streams yet.

@Jean-Philippe Baril For some reason, some ActivityPub conversations update after a day or two, some update weeks later, and some never update.

I've had threads where I go back a month later, and suddenly there is 10 more comments via ActivityPub. But most of the time, I never receive the older comments at all.

The autocomplete query checks your connections first and then merges this with another search for the same name in the entire known (to this site) fediverse. This query needs to run fast so we don't do a lot of filtering on it. That's why you see double - somebody was in both tables. You're welcome to file an issue so that this is on the list of things to fix.

As for Mastodon replies - Mastodon is post oriented, whereas (streams) is conversation oriented. You should see comments that are made on the original post, but for sub-comments, you may only see them if you're connected to that Mastodon author. Mastodon comments are not sent to the conversation owner, but to the owner of the post they are directly applied to, as well as all the commenter's connections. In a conversational network, comments are always sent to the creator of the original post, where they are re-distributed to all of the conversation recipients. This is the only sensible way to provide private/restricted conversations in a decentralised network. We can't change how Mastodon works and we will not be bullied by them to change the way our network works because we would need to throw out aspects/circles and private groups to do so. This is also the reason why that software doesn't support these features.

I totally agree.
I'm curious, as I wrote to Daniel Gultssh -- the creator of the XMPP Android app Conversions --, I thought I had heard from someone else here that you were involved in trying to incorporate into ActivityPub future specs the OpenWebAuth mechanism, and maybe even other of your creations.
Hopefully you are, because I have the feeling the ActivityPub train is well in march, that it's what everybody is jumping on and that the train conductor is almost de facto Mastodon (implementation), which does not seem to always make sense as you pointed out yourself. I really fear Mastodon is some kind of a new IE6.

Have added a wee bit more filtering of auto-complete results. I don't know if this will completely remove the duplicates, but it should reduce them.

You will notice on Mastodon itself, it does not always show the whole conversation, or certain comments are buried.

For example, to see a comment on a comment, sometimes you have to click on that comment. It does not appear in the main conversation, but appears as a reply to the comment.

It looks like they followed the Twitter model too well. And the Twitter model is horrible for displaying threads.

I think Twitter was never meant to have conversations.
That's why I never used Twitter.

Yet, here we are, stuck with a wanna be Twitter leading the way for the fediverse and ActivityPub standard...

Well, Twitter is so old, you used to be able to use it via text message (which is why the limit used to be 140 characters). You couldn't see entire conversations on your flip phone anyway, so they didn't design it with that in mind.
